Oregon football coach Mike Riley announced the retirement of head coach Mark Helfrich on Wednesday.
The move is a sign that Riley’s program is in trouble.
The Ducks have dropped to 3-3 on the season.
Riley was in charge for the past four seasons.
It’s been a rocky first year under Riley, who was fired on Oct. 31.
Oregon was 3-9 the past two years under Riley.
This year the Ducks have been a combined 5-9.
The loss of Helffrich to a torn ACL is expected to be a major blow.
But it also means Oregon has to deal with a new head coach in Nick Aliotti, who is known for his aggressive defense.
Aliotti has made some moves in the past year, including firing coach Mark Dantonio and replacing him with former Washington assistant John Fox.
The Cougars will look to make some moves and have some talent on offense.
They need a quarterback, a tight end and some help at linebacker.
The Oregon offense was among the best in the country.
They were ranked in the top 10 nationally for total offense and were second for passing offense.
The offensive line was solid.
They had seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss, tied for the most among FBS teams.
The defense was also solid.
The unit was ranked in top 10 in every category.
The biggest question is the running game, which was ranked second in the nation.
Oregon finished with 661 yards rushing and 431 yards per game, but the defense had only two sacks.
If Oregon can’t get some good plays, it could be a long season.
Oregon is expected on the outside looking in for the Pac-12 title game against Stanford in Las Vegas on Nov. 2.
